Hungarian Vizsla Club of SA Second Championship Show

Judge:  Mrs. Sharron Taylor (Qld)

Thank you to the HVCSA for inviting me to judge your 2nd Championship Specialty show on 9th June 200I.  Firstly, I was never so happy to see blue sky as I drove to SACA:-) Secondly, your club should he congratulated on holding such a great specially with a nature of “friendly" rivalry.  I was as impressed with the Vizsla's as I was the "true" spirit of dog showing which was evident throughout my judging and also during the afternoon get together.  I was in awe of the temperament on the dogs during the afternoon get together - too see so many entire males, females and babies and every age in between galloping around without a care in the world was just wonderful - breeders you should be congratulated! The true hunting instincts shown both those romping around the "bowling green" was fantastic to watch - to the dogs disappointment at the end of the day it was Swallows - I; Vizslas - 0 :-)

The dogs presented on the day I found with a few exceptions were presented in great coat and physical condition.  Temperaments were good on a whole, a few would rather have been somewhere else but we all know how that feels:-)

Some of the handling left a lot to be desired and I would strongly recommend that Vizsla exhibitors watch the other "good" handlers either in their own group or even other groups as I am sure that several of the dogs I judged (and saw exhibited in the following days) could do a lot more in the Gundog line-ups if handled better.

For Best in Show it was a very tough decision.  It is well known that when I have judged other breed specialties my eventual winners are normally predominantly bitches! Had the bitch used her tail for BIS she may very well have taken BIS, however the dog was the “ultimate” showman along with his outstanding breed characteristics and attributes could not be denied BIS on the day.

Baby Puppy Dog

1 entry.

1st:  May's
Erdos Midnite Cowboy

At nearly 5 months of age this baby was of correct size for his age.  Unfortunately, he was more or less uncontrollable which made it very difficult to assess him.   His movement was pretty much the same - lovely friendly nature but needs a lot of work to make him settle down.  He could do with more muscling particularly behind.

Minor Puppy Dog

1 entry.

1st:  Cragg's
Hungargunn Red Rogue

A well grown minor male, head was pleasing with correct proportions.  His eyes could have been a shade darker.   His forequarters were correctly angulated and matched his rear angulation giving him overall balance.  His topline had a slight dip just behind the withers which became more accentuated each time I asked him to move.  His feet turned out ever so slightly in front and I'm sure that with the correct exercise, etc, this will correct in time.  Feet were good.  Coat and colour were acceptable  Movement was true and straight coming and going and side gait was graceful without any over exaggeration.

Puppy Dog

2 entries.

1st:  Gallie & Marsden's
Erdos By Design

Another well grown puppy male, head was pleasing with correct proportions.  His forequarters were correctly angulated and matched his rear angulation giving him overall balance.  I would have liked a little more width of body on this puppy for his size however I know this will come with maturity.  Feet were very good, coat and colour were great.  On the move this young guy had fantastic side gait, very well balanced with reach and drive to die for, and was true and straight coming and going.  He actually worked better by the end of the day.

2nd:  Auricht's
Rozsda A Close Shave

At nearly 7 months of age I found this young male to lack the general appearance of "...  lean muscled, fine boned frame, steely sinews and dry limbs" required in the breed standard.  He was far too short, heavy with massive bone and I found him quite "untypical" of the breed.  His body shape was good, eyes could have been darker.  Good temperament.

Intermediate Dog

1 entry.

1st:  Marsden's
Erdos Indiana Jones

A shorter style of dog, and a little to heavy in front for my liking.  The standard calls for a deep long chest and this dog is excessively wide between the elbows and through the rib cage.  Another dog with eyes that could have been darker, his topline also dips behind the shoulders which is noticeable on the move.  Whilst he toed in front on the move he was true and straight behind.  Temperament was good, coat and colour was good.

State Bred Dog

1 entry.

1st:  Gibson's
Ch. Erdos Rebel Rouser

An older dog, another with a wide front between the elbows.  His head was acceptable, eye colour good.  Topline was acceptable for his age, however like the intermediate dog he toed in fronton the move and also lacked drive behind.  I would like to see more angulation behind on this dog.  Temperament was good, colour was good however his coat was in less than showable condition.

Australian Bred Dog

2 entries.

1st:  Townley, Trinka & Walter's
Aceweis Red N Hot

I was very impressed with this dog when he first entered the ring.  A larger male who really looked like he could work all day.  Head was pleasing, eye colour was good. His front and rear angulation were balanced, croup was good, feet were good. His topline had a slight dip behind the shoulders which became more evident as Dog CC and Reserve CC was judged and he seemed to have a slight weakness in the hock area.

2nd: Crump's
Ch. Erdos Razzle Dazzle E.T.

An older dog, another with a wide front between the elbows.  His head was acceptable, eye colour good.  Topline showed a definite tendency to roach and I would like to see more angulation behind on this dog.  His movement, like the intermediate dog, toed in front on the move and also lacked drive behind.  Temperament was good, colour was good however his coat was also in less than showable condition.

Open Dog

2 entries, 1 absent.

1st:  Bush's
Ch. Heiderst Sachmo

A smaller type of dog, in excellent show condition.  Pleasing head, correct eye colour, great topline, slightly wider in between elbows and tended to turn his elbows out slightly.  Angulation front and rear was balanced giving good effortless movement, feet were good.  His tail spoilt the picture on the move as he tended to hold it well above the horizontal.

Veteran Dog

4 entries.
A nice class of older males

1st:  O'Malley's
Gr. Ch. Hanafor Master Callaway

At just over 8 years of age this guy dominated the ring from the first time he set foot in it.  The only thing I would want to change on this gentleman is a little more length/return to the upper arm.  He was in great condition for his age, including teeth/bite.  He covered the ground with next to no effort, although a larger male he excelled in show attitude as well as being an extremely sound typical representative of the breed.

2nd:  Cragg's
Ch. Humeden Rousset Roland E.T.

This dog was a very moderate dog.  He didn't quite have the "pizzazz" that I was looking for to place higher than the eventual BIS winner.  His head was pleasing, eye colour good, front and rear angulation was balanced, feet good.  His topline showed a slight softness (?age/exercise) and he moved well.

3rd:  Elessar Knls'
Ch. Hanafor Caveat Reiffel

Another older male.  In good condition for his age as well.  Overall another sound male with pleasing head, good eye colour, balanced both front and rear, he was good on the move, feet were good - another that just lacked a bit of that show "pizzazz".

4th:  Orzeszko's
Ch. Hanafor Master Gyles C.D.

Overall another sound male displaying pleasing breed type - again lacking a bit of that show "pizzazz".

Baby Puppy Bitch

2 entries, 1 absent.

1st:  Marsden's
Erdos Material Girl

Much better behaved than the male baby!  Pleasing head, expression and eye colour.  Reasonably good feet, a typical 5 month old baby Vizsla.  Good topline.  Could do with a little more muscling and was a little narrow throughout the body including front however I feel she will develop into a very handy bitch as she has the basic body structure/angulation and shows lots of promise.

Minor Puppy Bitch

1 entry.

1st:  Cragg's
Hungargunn Shes A Tease

Nice minor.  Pleasing head, expression and eye colour.  Balanced angulation front and rear, good feet, coat and colour was good.  Super topline, she was a little weak in the hock area but this should improve with age.  She moved well for a minor and temperament was very good.

Puppy Bitch

2 entries.

1st:  Draws'
Erdos High Society

Another nice puppy.  Pleasing head, expression and eye colour.  Balanced angulation front and rear, good feet, coat and colour was good.  Good topline, she was a little weak in the hock area but this should improve with age.  She moved well, temperament was good and she should do well with more maturity.

2nd:  O'Malley & Smith's
Heiderst Hey Look Atme

At nearly 8 months of age this girl was at the top of the standard.  Her pigment was very light and eyes were so light as to appear "windhover".  Her feet were extremely flat and she tended to knuckle over.  Her body shape and style were good however with her size, feet and pigment I had to place her 2nd behind a much better overall puppy.

Junior Bitch

1 entry.

1st:  Harris & Stading's
Hanafor Belfrayden Jane

Really lovely young bitch.  Very nice head, expression, eye colour.  Great topline, very nice front and rear angulation - balanced.  Good feet.  Coat and colour were very nice - presented in super condition.  Moved very well for just out of puppy class and if I had to penalise her anywhere perhaps she moved a tad too close behind but not excessively so.  Had she have been better handled in Bitch CC she may very well have walked away with Bitch CC!

Intermediate Bitch

2 entries.

1st:  Cragg's
Ch. Hungargunn Unforgettable

Beautiful head, expression and eye colour.  Very good front angulation and assembly.  I would like a little better development in the 2nd thigh area.  Her coat and colour were good, her topline dips just a little behind the shoulder.  Feet were good, she moved reasonably well and was fairly true and straight coming and going.  Temperament was good.

2nd:  Marsden's
Ch. Erdos Dream Lover

A moderate bitch, pleasing head, expression and eye colour.  Front was moderately angulated although another that is excessively wide between the elbows.  She lacked in rear angulation and compared to her front was not balanced.  Her topline dips just a little behind the shoulder.  On the move she toes in and is noticeably "keyhole" behind.  Coat and colour were good, feet good.  Temperament was good.

State Bred Bitch

2 entries.

1st:  Gallie's
Ch. Heiderst Scarlet Fire A.D., E.T.

Pleasing head, expression and eye colour.  She is well balanced in front and rear.  Her topline spoils the picture.  A definite dip behind the shoulders.  Presented in superb show condition, coat and colour were great.  Feet were good.  She moved reasonably well however with her topline she tends to run up behind.

2nd:  Crump & Marsden's
Erdos Sweet Allyce

Not a happy girl.  I'm sure she would have preferred to stay at home today.  She appears too long for her height, front and rear angulation is balanced and she appears to be another that is excessively wide between the elbows.  Feet were good.  She looked to be either 5-6 weeks pregnant or going through a phantom pregnancy which made her topline dip badly.  Movement, all things considered, was reasonable.

Australian Bred Bitch

1 entry.

1st:  Kloppers'
Erdos Lady In Red

Pleasing head, expression and eye colour.  She is straighter in front and rear angulation than I was looking for which showed in her movement as she was rather short and choppy.  A tad bit longer in body for height and most uncooperative with her handler.  Colour and coat was good, feet were good.  Topline was reasonable.

Open Bitch

3 entries, 2 absent.

1st:  Harris & Stading's
Ch. Kimlise Isobella Ximenex

Really nice bitch.  Very nice head, expression, eye colour.  Great topline - so smooth over the shoulders, very nice front and rear angulation - balanced.  Good feet.  Coat and colour were very nice - superbly presented and handled.  Moved very well with effortless gait coming, going and on side profile.  The one thing I would wish for this bitch would be to use her tail just a little when moving.
