Fractal Glider - Vol 1 Issue 4 Jan 1998

Paul 'Fractal Glider' McCosh

Back in '95 when Paul started writing experimental acid trance, he was going under the name 'Q-d-K' (Quarter of Ketamine) he later started to change his style to a more industrial psychedelic trance sound, and evolved in the guise of fractal glider for several personal reasons but more than anything "because it sounds good"

"I started going out to the early 90's raves, and like most of us, I fell in love with the music". A common dream of many people is to one day produce this music themselves. This quickly became a dream of Paul's and because he was already an audio engineer, familiar with sequencing and with general P.C. and sound equipment knowledge quickly became a reality. So he got to it. He already owned a P.C. and then bought a sequencing program called 'Logic' and 'Alesis Quadra-Synth' keyboard which was multi-timbral (this means it had enough functions to pretty cover everything involved in producing decent music) He kept buying equipment and practicing to get where he is toady (which is producing and performing some pretty cool tracks).

"My current method of playing live is using P.C. and DAT to alternate tracks… soon I plan to move to playing live re-mixes of stuff as well as using a P.C. alone. This method is done using the new 'Pioneer CDJ 500S' as used by Mark Allen (Return to the Source) at 'Rainbow Serpent Festival'. This new technology offers fantastic looping functions which enables the artist to rearrange tracks with much ease. It makes possibilities unlimited. I think it's a new field for live acts in the future they know there tracks so well and it's hard to achieve a new sound each gig with the tracks in the same sequence that everybody knows".

"I am appreciative of rave promoters mainly because I am inspired by the energy of the big parties and the music played to me. I will often write his best music a day or two after a high vibed gathering…uplifted by the crowd, by both sides of the decks… I would write even if I had no support but feel very good that it's appreciated".

"Influences have been mainly artist from Europe and Israel. They seem to write with a lot of life feeling. Astral projection has always been my number one. The early T.I.P. Records artists, Kox Box, Hallucinogen and Psyharmonics all come close behind. Ollie Olsen, Andrew Till and CD Jay used to play Psy-trace, I tried to get that sound myself but was unsuccessful. With enough equipment knowledge and practice, I know have the ability to come close. As well as 'Sugar's' music being a great influence. Felix (Sugar) himself has helped to nurture my own talent into what it is today (thanks man)"

"My first club gig was 'Escape' in August '97 and I played my first party at 'Psynaps' in November '97. My favorite set was a 'Rainbow Serpent Festival 97' where I played alongside 'Quirk'. I kept the floor rocking it had a beautiful vibe and I couldn't stop smiling".

Paul has released 2 tracks on the Primitive Dawn CD (released by Green Ant Records) called 'The Shepherd' and 'Stingray'. He has produced four full private CD's, one of which was under Q-d-K, He also hopes to release a solo CD on Green Ant in the next 3 or 4 months.

"A personal ambition of the future is to stay focused on self improvement. It would be nice to write inspiring music for the people, to set a new style, to produce a new sound, to take peoples consciousness to new plains, new dimensions, to make people glide though their own fractals in there minds. I like the idea of traveling and will undoubtedly accept the invitation if and when it comes, but it is not a high priority as my goals are more of a musical nature. I would loved to be signed to an international label…but I'm enjoying working with 'Green Ant' at the moment…I enjoy taking it easy, I'm also a Post Production Engineer full time so there is no hurry…things seem to come to me anyway".

If you haven't witnessed Fractal Glider's talent yet, or you have and you liked what you heard, saw and felt, you can see him when he plays at coming events such as 'Green Ant Full Moon gatherings.
