Besides Water Lilies, there are three other types of aquatic plants which may be used in or around your water garden. These being:
Marginal Plants:
EG: Iris
These plants should be planted around the edge of your water feature in a
built up marsh area. The depth of the water should be around 10cm from the
soil to water surface. Deep marginal plants like a water depth of about 15cm to 20cm.
Floating Plants:
EG: Water Lettuce, Azzola
These plants do not need to be planted in soil as they float on the water
surface. If they grow too much they can be easily pulled out and trimmed.
(NB: Water Lettuce does not survive southern Australian climates in Winter.)
Oxygenators:
EG: Valsanaria, Myrophylum Amphibium, Alodea
Their main function is to add oxygen to the water rather than to be an
attractive addition to your pond. These plants will usually grow in any depth of water.
